Throwback Thursday: 'Lady Marmalade' From 'Moulin Rouge' "Ladies and gentlemen: Welcome to the Moulin Rouge." With that grand introduction, four of the world’s biggest pop stars transformed themselves into 19th-century French dancers for the cabaret-style music video "Lady Marmalade." Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, P!nk, and Mýa, costumed in garter belts, heels, and outlandish hair, performed the suggestive Labelle cover for the 2001 Baz Luhrmann movie "Moulin Rouge!" The single, released this week in 2001, topped Billboard's Hot 100 for five weeks, and scored a 2002 Grammy Award. Each of the four divas showcased a singular style, from Lil' Kim's poppy rap to Aguilera's soaring vocals. The decadent Paris nightclub sets the scene for the naughty French verse, "Voulez-vous couchez avec moi — ce soir?" Aguilera, in frizzy locks and fishnets, loved every minute of the group effort. "I'm a fan of all of theirs," she said of her co-stars. "And just to be in the same song doing something with them — collaborating, which I love to do — is a really big thing for me." Critics agreed. "We think whoever thought of turning Christina, Pink, Mya and Lil' Kim into courtesans and combining their sexual force into a single video inspired by Moulin Rouge deserves a Grammy," RollingStone.com raved. The track certainly struck a chord with fans. In 2001 alone, the single sold 5.2 million copies worldwide. — Claudine Zap (@zapkidd)
