Secretary of State John Kerry said Monday, the Obama administration is willing to talk with Iran over deteriorating security conditions in Iraq and is not ruling out potential U.S.-Iranian military cooperation in stemming the advance of Sunni extremists. Kerry also said that U.S. air strikes, including from unmanned drones, "may well" be an option that President Barack Obama chooses to try to halt the advance of fighters from the al-Qaida-inspired Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, or ISIL. In the last week, ISIL has taken Iraq's second-largest city, Mosul, and Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit in a lightening offensive that has plunged Iraq into its worst crisis since the 2011 withdrawal of U.S. troops. Over the weekend, militants posted graphic photos that appeared to show their gunmen massacring scores of captured Iraqi soldiers.
Blake Lively's romantic fantasy The Age of Adaline won the Friday box office race with $5 million from 2,991 theaters for a projected North American debut in the $12 million-plus range. Sill, that won't be enough to come in ahead of holdovers Furious 7, which will win the sleepy weekend with an estimated $16.3 million from 3,760 theaters as it jumps the $300 million mark domestically. Sony's Mall Cop 2 grossed $3.8 million Friday from 3,760 locations for an estimated weekend in the $13 million-$14 million range and putting its 10-day domestic total at $42 million.
An international maritime tribunal on Saturday ruled that Ghana should suspend a multi-billion dollar offshore oil development program in sea areas involved in a boundary dispute with Ivory Coast. Ivory Coast had made a request to the authority handling the case, the Hamburg-based International Tribunal of the Law of the Sea (ITLOS), that Ghana suspend oil exploration and exploitation operations in the disputed area while legal hearings into the dispute go ahead. The court said it accepted the request from Ivory Coast that Ghana should suspend offshore oil development in the disputed sea area and stop new development. The decision is important to British oil firm Tullow Oil which is developing the $4.9 billion TEN oil and gas project off the coast of Ghana, partly in waters involved in the boundary dispute. There had been forecasts that an injunction delaying the TEN development's opening in 2016 could cost Ghana's economy up to $6 billion over two years.
Given the universe may be a giant hologram , it seems only appropriate that renowned physicist and cosmologist Stephen Hawking — who has a lot to say on the matter — would appear as one himself in Sydney on Saturday night. Beamed all the way from his office at Cambridge University, Hawking was live-streamed in 3D in front of an excited crowd at the Sydney Opera House. His daughter, Lucy Hawking, who was physically in Sydney, took to the stage alongside her father to discuss his life and work. Hawking even gave hope to heartbroken fans of UK boy band One Direction, suggesting that ex-member, Zayn Malik, may still be part of the group in an alternate universe.
Ash from the Chilean volcano Calbuco, which erupted without warning this week, reached as far as southern Brazil on Saturday and prompted some airlines to cancel flights to the capitals of Chile, Argentina and Uruguay. Calbuco, considered one of the most dangerous along Chile's chain of around 2,000 volcanoes, erupted twice in 24 hours on Wednesday and Thursday, sending up a spectacular 17-km-high cloud and coating nearby towns in a thick layer of gray ash. Chile's national office of emergency said in its latest report, "The dangerous nature of volcanic activity like this plus the volcano's current instability that could lead to more intense activity in the short term indicates we should maintain the perimeter."
A source with direct knowledge of the matter said that two Australian drug convicts were notified on Saturday that they will be executed by firing squad in 72 hours at the Indonesian prison island of Nusakambangan. The source told Reuters, "A 72 hours notice of execution was given to Bali 9 death row inmates Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran on Saturday." A lawyer for a Nigerian death row inmate who is among the group said a total of seven convicts have received notifications of their imminent execution.
