Greece's recent efforts to get its public finances into shape could have been the model for recently defaulted Argentina to follow. That's the view of Jean-Claude Juncker, the man who is due to take over the European Union's executive branch in November. After talks with Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras in Athens, Juncker said the reforms carried about by the country over the past few years could have served as a model for Argentina, which last week defaulted on its debts for the second time since 2001. In his first trip abroad since being elected to head the European Commission, Juncker praised Greek efforts to improve public finances, and insisted that he played a key role in keeping the country in the euro currency zone. Greece is poised to soon emerge from its savage six-year recession. Four years ago it nearly went bankrupt and required billions in rescue loans from the eurozone and the International Monetary Fund.
Subway is speaking out amid the latest allegations against Jared Fogle. Business Insider claims the FBI has subpoenaed an affidavit detailing alleged texts been the chain's former spokesperson and a former female Subway franchisee, in which Jared reportedly says he paid for sex with a 16-year-old. "About the most recent news story on Jared Fogle, this allegation, if true, is appalling and is contrary to the values of our brand, Subway wrote on its Facebook page. "As previously stated, we have suspended our relationship with Jared."
Amid the frenzy surrounding Cecil the Lion's death last week, Idaho huntress Sabrina Corgatelli is speaking publicly about her love for hunting. During an interview with Today's Carson Daly, Corgatelli took arguably the more controversial side of the debate. She pondered in responding to Daly, "everything I've done here is legal, so how can you fault somebody because of their hobbies?" Corgatelli also defended herself after social media users called her a "cold-hearted" killer after she posted photos of her hunting giraffes and wildebeests. She added, "there is a connection with the animal, and just because we hunt them doesn't mean we don't have a respect for them."
Puerto Rico has now officially defaulted on its debts, and no one knows what the consequences are going to be. We do know that the Commonwealth is not allowed to seek any kind of bankruptcy protection to shield its assets from its creditors despite the fact that Treasury Secretary Jack Lew said just last week that if Puerto Rico had to somehow try to struggle through without being able to file for bankruptcy, the results would likely be chaotic, protracted, and costly both for Puerto Rico and more broadly for the United States. So, if you thought Puerto Rico’s economic plight was bad yesterday, brace yourself, it got much worse today. The island’s government has given up its last chance to get itself out of this mess. Now, it’s all in the hands of heartless bondholders.
Hillary Clinton stands with Planned Parenthood. Clinton said during a taped statement on Monday, "I'll never stop fighting to protect the ability and right of every woman in this country to make her own health decisions." A recent viral video has put the federally funded program under social scrutiny regarding fetal tissue donations. Clinton added, "if this feels like a full-on assault on women's health, that's because it is.
The Senate voted down a bill Monday that would take away more than $500 million in federal funding from Planned Parenthood after activists published a series of "sting" videos targeting the group. The Center for Medical Progress admits the videos are edited and has released some full-length versions, as well as transcripts.
