US Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in Beirut on June 4 on an unannounced visit with a focus on the humanitarian response to the war in neighboring Syria. Kerry announced $290 million in aid to boost UN efforts in Syria and neighboring countries hosting refugees. He also denounced Syria’s presidential vote as a farce. “Nothing has changed between the day before the election and the day after. Nothing,” Kerry said on his one-day visit.
