Israel pulled its ground forces out of the Gaza Strip on Tuesday and began a 72-hour truce with Hamas mediated by Egypt as a first step towards negotiations on a more enduring end to the month-old war. Minutes before the ceasefire started at 8 a.m. (1 a.m. ET), Hamas launched a salvo of rockets, calling them revenge for Israel's "massacres." No injuries were reported. Israeli armor and infantry withdrew from the Gaza Strip ahead of the truce, with a military spokesman saying their main goal of destroying cross-border infiltration tunnels had been completed. Spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Peter Lerner said, reflecting Israeli readiness to resume fighting if attacked, troops and tanks would be redeployed in defensive positions outside the Gaza Strip and we will maintain those defensive positions. Gaza officials say the war has killed 1,834 Palestinians, most of them civilians.
Elias Lindholm has agreed to a two-year contract extension worth $5.4 million with the Carolina Hurricanes. He will make $2.5 million in 2016-17 and then $2.9 million during the 2017-18 campaign. Lindholm, who was the fifth overall pick in 2013, showed plenty of promise last season while recording 17 goals and 39 points in 81 games. "We expect he will be a very important part of the Hurricanes as he continues to develop as a professional," GM Ron Francis said after the signing.
NASA's rockets are astounding machines, capable of blasting into space at thousands of miles per hour and withstanding temperatures twice the melting point of steel. But they can't take off underwater. Rising sea levels caused by melting ice caps threaten to disrupt a handful of NASA launch sites along U.S. coastlines, the space agency warns. NASA says, In the coming years, launch facilities at Florida's Kennedy Space Center and other places may need to be retrofitted or even moved inland.
If you've got it, flaunt it! Selena Gomez hid nothing on Instagram, as the "Come and Get It" singer posed in nothing but her lingerie. Selena, 23, has been upping the ante when it comes to the way she's perceived in recent months, most notably debuting an incredibly racy music video for single "Good for You," in which she writhes on the floor and takes a very steamy shower. This latest picture proves the former Disney darling has pushed those days far back into her memory, even though it seems like just yesterday she was starring on the Wizards of Waverly Place.
Hillary Clinton aced the exam, except the annoying email portion. But even during Friday’s meticulous grilling by NBC News chief foreign affairs correspondent Andrea Mitchell—during which the beleaguered Democratic frontrunner gave the same familiar, tortured and occasionally implausible explanations for her decision to use a private email server to conduct official government business—Clinton was calm and measured. Indeed, the former first lady, U.S. senator and secretary of state was nearly coherent on that inconvenient subject, and betrayed none of the resentment and frustration that she hasn’t been able to conceal during her repeated confrontations with mobs of shouting reporters.
Pot, reefer, weed, cannabis. No matter what you call it, it's all marijuana. Nationwide, 19 states have decriminalized it in some form, and a new effort is underway to add Florida to the list. Enough signatures on a petition could send the issue to the state ballot in 2016: A constitutional amendment to legalize small amounts of marijuana for recreational use. in 2014, a proposed medical marijuana amendment lost by a vote of 57.6 percent to 42.4 percent. It needed 60 percent to win. The Florida Cannabis Action Network is behind the new push.
