While the Islamic State's heavy weapons and armor have made it a potent fighting force against Iraq's military, they also make the militants vulnerable to newly authorized American airstrikes. Unlike insurgents who use hit-and-run tactics, the Islamic State is operating more as a conventional army, often moving through open terrain where they can be easily struck from the air. "It inherently gives you a more visible footprint," said Jeff White, a former Defense Intelligence Agency official now at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy.
A glamorous Vanity Fair cover served as Caitlyn Jenner's introduction to the world, but far more mundane matters await the Olympic champion before she can legally assume her new identity. Applications, affidavits, a background check, a possible court appearance and even a trip to the dreaded Department of Motor Vehicles with some decidedly less artful photography are in store for Jenner. The paperwork that will formally transition Bruce Jenner into Caitlyn Jenner is considerably less glossy and aromatic than the pages of the celebrity magazine that heralded her new identity on Monday, setting a Twitter record and sparking renewed discussion of her transition. Establishing her changed life officially will involve getting new identity documents, such as a driver's license, birth certificate and Social Security card, as well as changing bank and financial records.
Plane tickets for under $100? Southwest unveiled a 72-hour long sale on Wednesday that will allow customers to snatch up seats on domestic flights for slashed prices — but the sale won’t help anyone looking to book a summer vacation. The sale, which ends on Thursday at 11:59 p.m., only applies to trips booked for travel between August 25 through December 16. But flights for Labor Day and Thanksgiving — two of the busiest travel periods of the year and key revenue days for airlines — are conveniently excluded.

Former US senator and Rhode Island governor Lincoln Chafee will seek the nomination of the Democratic party to run for US president in 2016. Chafee has served as a Republican and an Independent but has never before run for office as a Democrat. Analysts say he will aggressively attack presumptive front-runner Hillary Clinton on her foreign policy record. In his announcement speech, he called for the US to move to the metric system and end capital punishment. He also advocated an "open-minded approach" to drug trafficking. Chafee joins Clinton, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders and former Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley in the Democratic primary race
The judge presiding over the murder trial of Colorado theater gunman James Holmes denied a motion by defense lawyers for a mistrial on Wednesday over videos shown to jurors of a psychiatrist’s interviews with the admitted shooter. Public defender Kristen Nelson argued that a video played in court, in which Holmes described details of the crime to court-appointed psychiatrist William Reid, violated his constitutional right against self-incrimination. It was the second time Arapahoe County District Court Judge Carlos Samour has denied a defense motion for a mistrial since Reid took the stand late last week. The 27-year-old Holmes has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to multiple counts of first-degree murder and attempted murder stemming from the July 2012 rampage. His lawyers have said that the former neuroscience graduate student is schizophrenic and heard voices that told him to kill.
