Secretary of State John Kerry signaled on Monday that the U.S. may be willing to work with Iran to stabilize the quickly deteriorating situation in Iraq. Kerry told Yahoo News’ Katie Couric that the U.S. was “open to discussions” with Iran if the country was willing to “do something that is going to respect the integrity and sovereignty of Iraq.” Iran, which is led by Shiite Muslims, is a supporter of Iraq's Shiite prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki. Al-Maliki's government is grappling with the advance of the Sunni militant group known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. Asked if the U.S. might be willing to cooperate militarily with Iran, once part of the triumvirate of George W. Bush’s "Axis of Evil," Kerry said, “I wouldn’t rule out anything,” noting he preferred to go “step by step.”
