On Jan. 1, the key provisions of the Affordable Care Act took effect. Americans gained access to new health plans subsidized by federal dollars. Insurers no longer can turn away people with existing conditions. Millions are now eligible for new Medicaid benefits. But, The Wall Street Journal reports, the federal law also upended existing health-insurance arrangements for millions of people. Companies worry about the expense of providing new policies, some hospitals aren't seeing the influx of new patients they expected to balance new costs and entrepreneurs say they may hire more part-time workers to avoid offering more coverage.
NFL legend Emmitt Smith is now distancing himself from Donald Trump ... backing out as a judge in the upcoming Miss USA pageant after Trump trashed Mexicans. Smith was one of 5 celebrity judges that was scheduled to participate on the show. Several high profile people have dropped out from the production including co-host Cheryl Burke, Flo Rida ( who was supposed to perform) and Roselyn Sanchez. Don't forget Univision and NBC have also cut ties with Trump ... after he referred to Mexican immigrants as mostly drug dealers and rapists.
Google has apologized after its new photo app labelled two black people as “gorillas”. The photo service, launched in May, automatically tags uploaded pictures using its own artificial intelligence software. “Google Photos, y’all fucked up. My friend’s not a gorilla,” Jacky Alciné tweeted on Sunday after a photo of him and a friend was mislabelled as “gorillas” by the app. Shortly after, Alciné was contacted by Yonatan Zunger, the chief architect of social at Google. “Big thanks for helping us fix this: it makes a real difference,” Zunger tweeted to Alciné. He went on to say that problems in image recognition can be caused by obscured faces and “different contrast processing needed for different skin tones and lighting”.
California Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill on Tuesday to make it harder for parents to opt out of vaccinating their children for communicable diseases in the aftermath of a measles outbreak at Disneyland that was linked to low inoculation rates.
A document obtained by The Associated Press shows the Justice Department is investigating whether airlines are colluding to grow at a slower pace as part of an effort to keep airfares high. The government has requested information from airlines as part of the antitrust investigation. Justice Department spokeswoman Emily Pierce confirmed Wednesday that the department was investigating potential "unlawful coordination" among some airlines.
Macy’s, the iconic department store, is the latest big company to cut all ties with the businessman and would-be president Donald Trump, following his derogatory and racist comments about Mexico and Mexicans. On Wednesday, Macy’s said it was “disappointed and distressed” about Trump’s remarks, in which he described some Mexicans as criminals, drug dealers and rapists, and said it would terminate sales of “Donald J Trump” branded business wear. Macy’s is the fifth big company to have ended partnerships with Trump following his attack on Mexico for “sending people [to the US] that have lots of problems”. He added: “They are bringing drugs, and bringing crime, and their rapists.”
