Gaza residents crowded banks, vegetable markets and shops Thursday, taking advantage of a brief cease-fire that offered the first respite from 10 days of fierce fighting between Hamas and Israel, while the conflict looked set to resume within hours. The truce was briefly thrown into doubt when Gaza militants fired three mortar shells toward Israel after the truce took effect at 10 a.m. local time, but it appeared to be an isolated incident, and Israel did not respond.
The Tunisian man accused of piloting a migrant boat that sank off Libya, killing more than 700 people, is himself a migrant who was forced at gunpoint to captain the ship because of his experience as a fisherman, his brother said on Saturday. Italian authorities say the man named in court as Mohammed Ali Malek, 27, was in charge of the heavily overloaded fishing boat that capsized shortly before midnight on April 18 with hundreds of African and Bangladeshi migrants locked below deck. The man's brother told Reuters the Tunisian's real name was Nourredine Mahjoub and he had first traveled clandestinely to Europe five years ago, spending time in Italy and France before being deported.
Blake Lively's romantic fantasy The Age of Adaline won the Friday box office race with $5 million from 2,991 theaters for a projected North American debut in the $12 million-plus range. Sill, that won't be enough to come in ahead of holdovers Furious 7, which will win the sleepy weekend with an estimated $16.3 million from 3,760 theaters as it jumps the $300 million mark domestically. Sony's Mall Cop 2 grossed $3.8 million Friday from 3,760 locations for an estimated weekend in the $13 million-$14 million range and putting its 10-day domestic total at $42 million.
The historic Dharahara tower, a landmark in Nepal's capital of Kathmandu, collapsed during a 7.8 magnitude earthquake on Saturday. According to reports, its rubble trapped around 200 people. According to The Times of India, Dharahara, which first opened to the public 10 years ago, had a balcony on the eighth floor where visitors could look out over part of Kathmandu. At least 876 people were killed in Nepal, and dozens more in surrounding countries, after Saturday's earthquake. In the Kathmandu Valley, which has a population of 2.5 million people, there are many buildings susceptible to extensive damage during earthquakes. Saturday's quake was also considered shallow, and these types often cause more damage than ones that originate further below the Earth's surface.
An international maritime tribunal on Saturday ruled that Ghana should suspend a multi-billion dollar offshore oil development program in sea areas involved in a boundary dispute with Ivory Coast. Ivory Coast had made a request to the authority handling the case, the Hamburg-based International Tribunal of the Law of the Sea (ITLOS), that Ghana suspend oil exploration and exploitation operations in the disputed area while legal hearings into the dispute go ahead. The court said it accepted the request from Ivory Coast that Ghana should suspend offshore oil development in the disputed sea area and stop new development. The decision is important to British oil firm Tullow Oil which is developing the $4.9 billion TEN oil and gas project off the coast of Ghana, partly in waters involved in the boundary dispute. There had been forecasts that an injunction delaying the TEN development's opening in 2016 could cost Ghana's economy up to $6 billion over two years.
Given the universe may be a giant hologram , it seems only appropriate that renowned physicist and cosmologist Stephen Hawking — who has a lot to say on the matter — would appear as one himself in Sydney on Saturday night. Beamed all the way from his office at Cambridge University, Hawking was live-streamed in 3D in front of an excited crowd at the Sydney Opera House. His daughter, Lucy Hawking, who was physically in Sydney, took to the stage alongside her father to discuss his life and work. Hawking even gave hope to heartbroken fans of UK boy band One Direction, suggesting that ex-member, Zayn Malik, may still be part of the group in an alternate universe.
