France's first lady is making progress in a hospital, where she has been receiving care following a gossip magazine's report that President Francois Hollande was having a secret affair with an actress. Valerie Trierweiler (tree-a-va- loor) was hospitalized Jan. 9 for rest after Closer magazine reported about Hollande's alleged affair with actress Julie Gayet. Trierweiler spokesman Patrice Biancone told The Associated Press by phone Thursday that the first lady was progressing, saying six days of rest "counts, after all."
On his first trip to the Balkans as U.S. secretary of state, John Kerry visits Kosovo on Wednesday. The visit is meant to underscore Western concern over the slow pace of progress 16 years after a U.S.-led air war set it on the road to independence. Against a backdrop of widespread frustration over a lack of progress on democracy, corruption and Western integration, Kosovo faces a deepening political crisis over relations with former master Serbia. The country of 1.8 million people, the majority ethnic Albanians, broke away from Serbia in 1999. That was when the United States led an 11-week NATO bombing campaign to halt the killing and expulsion of ethnic Albanian civilians by Serbian security forces. They had been fighting a two-year counter-insurgency war.
U2 frontman Bono is auctioning his bike to a donor as part of a campaign for his organization (RED), which raises money to battle AIDS. Last year Bono was seriously injured with this bike ride, in New York City's Central Park. The Associated Press reports, that ride with rock royalty can be won by donating at least $10 through the Omaze platform. The campaign launches on Tuesday, December 1st, to honor World AIDS Day. Bono told the AP, reflecting on the bike accident that prompted surgery, "I'm not sure that was as funny to my band as it was to me. But I think we're going to have fun, and yeah, we'll go visit the scene of the crime." Jimmy Kimmel is dedicating his December 1st episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! to the campaign, recruiting Olivia Wilde to co-host the home shopping parody (SHOPATHON). The episode will also feature Tom Brady, who is donating a lesson on how to "master your spiral," and Shaquille O'Neal, who is offering to appear in a donor's holiday card.
Republican Presidential nominee Donald Trump has started this week off with a bang, blaming Black Lives Matter for his campaign turning a supposed public endorsement announcement from “over 100” black clergy members into a “private event”, where no media would be allowed and where he would likely be scolded for his rhetoric. According to the Associated Press, Trump told MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” that some of the ministers and pastors , of 100 black evangelical clergy members, might not be endorsing him because he believes “all lives matter.” Trump said Monday on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe”, that probably some of the Black Lives Matter folks called them up and said, ‘Oh, you shouldn’t be meeting with Trump because he believes all lives matter.” According to the people invited to meet with Trump, meanwhile, many objected that the meeting was being described as an endorsement event by his campaign. Last week, in an open letter to the clergy invited to meet with Trump on Ebony, 100 black religious leaders and scholars wrote to ask the ministers not to meet with Trump and give him “the appearance of legitimacy” among their congregations.
Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Richard Branson, Jeff Bezos, and pretty much every other crazy rich tech leader you can imagine have announced that they’re banding together to combat climate change with a new partnership called the Breakthrough Energy Coalition. Through the partnership, the group’s members have committed to use a substantial portion of their hundreds of billions of dollars in collective net worth to invest in early stage clean energy companies. Zuckerberg wrote a Facebook post Sunday night announcing the partnership. The timing of the announcement coincides with the global climate conference, COP21, taking place in Paris this week, where world leaders including President Barack Obama will convene to discuss their plans to deal with climate change.
After the Thanksgiving holiday and a relatively quiet week last week on the campaign trail, here is the reality -- we are now just over 60 days until the Feb. 1 Iowa caucuses. Here's where your GOP race stands with two months to go: Trump (after the Paris terrorist attacks) is leading in almost every poll; Ted Cruz is rising; Ben Carson is dropping; Marco Rubio remains in double digits; and Jeb Bush is stuck in the single digits.
