Investors expect the Environmental Protection Agency to back down from a proposal to reduce the amount of ethanol blended into gasoline this year, but reducing ethanol content may be the only way to save its industry, an energy economist said in Chicago last week. In November the EPA proposed scaling back the amount of corn ethanol required in gasoline this year from 14.4 to 13 billion gallons, citing decreased demand for motor fuel and a constraint on the percentage of ethanol that can be blended into gasoline without voiding vehicle warranties. Corn growers, ethanol refiners and farm-belt politicians have pressured the EPA to abandon this plan.
An astonishingly tragic year for air travel in Southeast Asia turned worse Sunday when an AirAsia plane carrying 162 people disappeared over stormy Indonesian waters, with no word on its fate despite several hours of searching by air and sea. AirAsia Flight 8501 vanished in airspace possibly thick with dense storm clouds, strong winds and lightning on its way from Surabaya, Indonesia, to Singapore. Searchers had to fight against heavy rain. The Malaysia-based carrier's loss comes on top of the still-unexplained disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 in March and the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 in July over Ukraine. At the Surabaya airport, shocked family members pored over the plane's manifest, crying and embracing when they learned the news. Nearly all the passengers and crew are Indonesians, who are frequent visitors to Singapore, particularly on holidays.
As the world’s oldest and arguably most prestigious annual marathon, The Boston Marathon is widely regarded as the pinnacle event within the sport of running. The longevity and traditions surely contribute to Boston’s reputation, but it’s the method of entry that gives the race its luster within the road racing community. The Boston Marathon is the only marathon in the United States that requires qualifying times, leading runners across the world to chase a “BQ.” For those lucky enough to gain entry, race preparation begins months before ever setting foot in the starting corral.
