Investors expect the Environmental Protection Agency to back down from a proposal to reduce the amount of ethanol blended into gasoline this year, but reducing ethanol content may be the only way to save its industry, an energy economist said in Chicago last week. In November the EPA proposed scaling back the amount of corn ethanol required in gasoline this year from 14.4 to 13 billion gallons, citing decreased demand for motor fuel and a constraint on the percentage of ethanol that can be blended into gasoline without voiding vehicle warranties. Corn growers, ethanol refiners and farm-belt politicians have pressured the EPA to abandon this plan.
According to NBC News, Ben Carson on Wednesday said that he believes people should attack in run-ins with active shooters. On Tuesday, Carson said he "would not just stand there and let him shoot me." He continued, "I would say, 'Hey guys, everybody attack him. He may shoot me but he can't get us all.'" The GOP presidential candidate's comments -in response to last week's mass shooting in Oregon- have been the subject of much controversy. When asked about the comments on CBS "This Morning" on Wednesday, Carson said, "I want to plant in people's minds what to do in a situation like this because unfortunately this is probably not going to be the last time this happens."

The gunman who killed nine people at an Oregon college exchanged fire with two police officers, who struck him once before he retreated into a classroom and killed himself. Douglas County District Attorney Rick Wesenberg at a news conference said he found the two plainclothes officers were justified in using force against the gunman after he carried out the rampage on Thursday at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg. The shooting carried out by Chris Harper-Mercer, 26, ranks as the deadliest in the United States in two years and the bloodiest in modern Oregon history.
According to fusion.net, The New York Metropolitan Opera hired Marian Anderson in 1954. This made her the first black singer to work for the company. Three months later, she debuted in Verdi‘s Un ballo en maschera. According to NPR, the performance went well. A broadcast at the time stated: Anderson later said she felt the pressure of that first performance: “I was there onstage, mixing the witch’s brew. I trembled, and when the audience applauded and applauded before I could sing a note, I felt myself tightening into a knot.” Despite her nerves, and that she was in the twilight of her career, the performance received a huge ovation.
