Debate: Secularism or economy? - 3

by TIMES NOW 14:25 mins

In a debate moderated by TIMES NOW's Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami, panelists -- Piyush Goyal, National Treasurer & MP Rajya Sabha , BJP; Salman Soz, Leader, Congress; Devesh Thakur, Leader, JD (U); and Dr Bejon Misra, Consumer Expert -- discuss the issue of ruling class abandoning the middle class and food inflation hitting the roof, whether the people of India should judge Congress and BJP by their promises or their performances, and whether the Congress will eventually hae to encounter Narendra Modi on the economy.High prices of onion and other kitchen items drove the headline inflation to six-month high of 6.1 per cent in August, limiting options for a rate cut by the new RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan who is scheduled to announce his maiden monetary policy review later this week. Wholesale price index (WPI) based inflation rose for the third straight month, driven by a whopping 244.62 per cent jump in onion prices on annual basis. WPI inflation was 5.79 per cent in July. The latest inflation data is going to weigh high on Rajan's mind when he announces the mid-quarter monetary policy on Sep 30. The industry has been demanding a cut in key policy rate to spur economic growth. Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council (PMEAC) Chairman C Rangarajan said inflation, besides forex market, is expected to weigh on the RBI's decision on its policy. It is 7 months away from General Elections and the food inflation figures have confirmed the middle class' worst fears. It's a pocket pinching price hike, and the political class is busy fighting pointless political battles. But, what about the middle class who eventually have foot the exorbitant bills. Is it not time for these leaders in New Delhi to end these pseudo debates, sham proposals and talk about the real issues?
