An Israeli-declared cease-fire and troop withdrawals slowed violence in the Gaza war Monday, though an attack on Israeli bus that killed one person in Jerusalem underscored the tensions still simmering in the region. Several cease-fires have broken down during the 3½-week war — including Friday when an internationally negotiated truce collapsed amid violence and mutual recrimination between Israel and Hamas. But with Hamas rocket fire tapering off over the last 24 hours and Israel's ground operation in Gaza winding down, violence in a war that officials say has killed more than 1,800 Palestinians and more than 60 Israelis appeared — for the moment — to be waning. The lull was broken by the Jerusalem assault, which saw a man ram a front end of a construction excavator into an Israeli bus. Police described the incident as a "terrorist attack," indicating Palestinian involvement.
Director Ron Howard revealed that his credit of blockbuster films could have once included Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace. In a podcast interview on Happy Sad Confused with Josh Horowitz, the director said that he along with Robert Zemeckis and Steven Spielberg passed on golden offers from Lucas to direct the franchise prequels. “He didn’t necessarily want to direct them,”said Howard. “He told me that he had talked to [Robert] Zemeckis, he talked to me, he talked to Steven Spielberg.
Exactly a century ago this holiday weekend, more than a dozen men climbed to the top of Stone Mountain outside Atlanta, pulled on white hoods and lit a 16ft, kerosene-soaked wooden cross, marking the rebirth of Ku Klux Klan. The next year, work started on an enormous relief carving to commemorate the heroes of the Confederacy. Yet, in recent years Stone Mountain has become a point of increasing tension for Richard Rose, head of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in Atlanta, and many others in a city now far more black than white. Although neither side has been able to claim victory on Stone Mountain, Rose said his group was about to escalate the fight, starting with a suit against the state of Georgia, which owns the mountain and the monument. After that, he said: “We will take more direct action.”
To one degree or another, every candidate running for president has enlisted their family in their effort. But none have gone so far as Ted Cruz, whose surging campaign has placed his wife Heidi and father Rafael at the tip of the spear, leading fundraising and organizing efforts as if they were paid staffers. Rafael Cruz has been central to his son’s evangelical outreach efforts for months, serving as a key bridge between religious leaders and the campaign. As for Heidi Cruz, she at first focused on fundraising, but after largely has started ratcheting up her public presence in recent weeks. She joined Twitter this month and has already done solo swings through states including Alabama and Georgia.
Drake is such a fan of Adele that he insists he would do anything she wants, even her laundry! Speaking previously about her admiration for the Canadian rapper, Adele said: "I really want us to do an official remix of Hotline Bling. I love Drake. I love Drake so much." However, it's not just his music she's a fan of, she also appreciates his style. She told etalk: "I even got the coat that's in the Hotline Bling video - I got it delivered the other day, I ordered it. The red one."
The officer killed while responding to a shooting at a Colorado Planned Parenthood clinic was remembered Saturday as a beloved father of two, leader in his church and a former competitive ice skater. Garrett Swasey, a six-year veteran of the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs police force, was one of three people who died when suspected gunman Robert Dear, 57, rushed into a Planned Parenthood clinic Friday with an AK-47. Police say he shot at responding officers from inside the building during a horrifying five-hour standoff.
