Carvel, the storied 80-year-old ice cream chain, is re-energizing stores and has a renewed strategy on growth. The brand has roughly 400 stores in the Northeast and Florida and is looking to open more stores, particularly its express shoppes, which are smaller and can fit anywhere from busy street locations to airports. Carvel President Scott Colwell says the company is not deterred by the resurgence of frozen yogurt, saying the brand has “always dealt with a very competitive marketplace.”
