One of the closest races in Olympic speedskating history came down to a final lunge of the skate. Then came a few more agonizing seconds to figure out who won. Zbigniew Brodka knocked off all the favorites in the 1,500 meters Saturday, capturing Poland's first gold medal in Olympic speedskating by a mere three-thousandths of a second over Koen Verweij of the Netherlands. Shani Davis? He wasn't even close. Verweij skated in the final pair and powered toward the line, trying desperately to knock off Brodka's time in a race that requires both endurance and a sprinter's speed.
Hundreds of Wyoming residents were forced to flee a wind-driven wildfire that destroyed at least 10 homes even as a separate blaze in neighboring Idaho burned several cabins to the ground and prompted dozens to evacuate. According to the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise wildfires have consumed more than 9.2 million acres across the United States so far this year, compared to the 10-year average of nearly 6.4 million acres. Authorities said that fire and the one in Idaho, which has blackened an estimated 2,500 acres in the southwest part of the state, are believed to have been caused by humans but investigations are ongoing.
They might have crossed the globe on dozens of tours over their 53-year career, but The Rolling Stones are showing no sign of slowing down. In fact, their recent rider requests for the Zip Code tour across North America put most younger rock bands to shame, if TMZ are to be believed. Apparently, the band insisted on a 24-hour bar at each hotel they stayed in — "to keep the booze flowing," the site says. They also request blacked-out windows, presumably to keep that pesky dawn light at bay, extra butlers (of course), after hours dry cleaning and plentiful supplies of their favourite cigarettes, Marlboro Reds and Lights. They also ask for written instructions on how to use all the electronics in the room. Fledging rockers take note: That's how you travel the world.
Director Matt Reeves is gearing up to begin principal photography on War of the Planet of the Apes this month, which means he’s been working on filling out the cast for the next installment in the franchise. Andy Serkis will of course be returning as ape leader Caesar, and last month we learned that Woody Harrelson had come on board to portray a human antagonist. As Reeves reportedly looks for a second human lead for the film, he’s adding on to the already large group of apes. Character actor Steve Zahn, who has appeared in films such as Dallas Buyers Club, has joined the project to play a new chimp character.
When he steps on the stage for the first Democratic presidential debate on Tuesday in Las Vegas, Bernie Sanders will be a changed candidate from when he started his insurgent run back in April. The Vermont senator has shifted his positions and tone over the last several months, moving to the left on gun control, race and other issues, aligning more closely with the Democratic base and making himself more palatable to the party as its potential presidential nominee. The conventional wisdom of the Democratic race holds that Sanders is the principled liberal challenging Hillary Clinton, who has flip-flopped on a number of issues in her political career.
