Before the tabloid headlines and the award show antics, Kanye West was an art school dropout who wanted to rap. Not taken seriously as a performer, West silently worked on his 2004 breakout hit, "All Falls Down," while producing songs for Jay Z. The Grammy-nominated track was off his hugely popular debut record, "The College Dropout." Billboard called it a "paradigm-shifting solo LP which would come to influence almost every bit of hip-hop that came after it." The 2004 music video is a surprisingly lighthearted take on the rapper, who turns 37 on June 8. The video is shot from his viewpoint as he and his girlfriend, played by "Clueless" star Stacey Dash, arrive at a California airport to catch a flight with piles of Louis Vuitton luggage and stacks of cash. "We all self-conscious, I'm just the first to admit it," he raps as he follows his girlfriend through the gate. Alas, he can't catch a break: His shirt gets covered in mustard, and then he's stopped at security. After several attempts, he finally puts himself inside the X-ray machine. "It seems we living the American dream," West raps. "The people highest up got the lowest self-esteem, the prettiest people do the ugliest things, for the road to riches and diamond rings." West recalled to the New York Times that when he realized how to make "raps with a message sound cool ... I was able to just write 'All Falls Down' in 15 minutes." Those 15 minutes propelled him to fame. The rapper's Grammy-winning album has sold more than 3 million copies to date. 2Pac's 1995 single "Dear Mama" was dedicated to his mom, Afeni Shakur. "When I was pregnant and in jail, I thought I was going to have the baby and the baby would never be with me," she says in the video. "But I was acquitted a month and three days before Tupac was born. I was real happy. Because I had a son." The track was the most popular song from his best-selling album, "Me Against the World." "I finally understand/ For a woman it ain't easy tryin' to raise a man," raps the artist, who died in 1996. "You always was committed / A poor single mother on welfare, tell me how ya did it / There's no way I can pay you back / But the plan is to show you that I understand / You are appreciated."
Carrie Underwood Promises to 'See You Again' Carrie Underwood's military-themed "See You Again" is a fitting tribute for Memorial Day. The 2013 ballad of love and loss focuses on life's most emotional times. In it, the country music star promises that she will "see you again," in either this life or the next. "Said goodbye, turned around and you were gone, gone, gone," Underwood sings. "I will see you again, whoa. This is not where it ends. I will carry you with me, oh. 'Til I see you again." The music video features hope and heartbreak: joyful graduations, sweet marriage proposals, and tearful reunions of military members and their families. But there are also moments of anguish: a touching tribute to the victims of the Sandy Hook school shootings, views of an Oklahoma tornado's aftermath, and a Vietnam veteran's headstone. Underwood said the lyrics reflect her beliefs. "It just takes a positive spin on moving on out of this life, on death," she said. "And it's not the end. In my mind and in my faith and in what I believe, there is a heaven, there is a God. And we're gonna be there someday." There's no one storyline — and that's the point, Underwood said in Country Weekly. "I've been hearing the most amazing stories on what it means to different people, and it means different things." — Claudine Zap (@zapkidd)

Hard to believe, but Will Smith's 1997 rap came out the same year as his first "Men in Black" movie. Fans still love to get jiggy: The YouTube video has been seen over 6.2 million times. The popular performer's kids have followed his lead: Jaden Smith starred with his dad in "After Earth." And daughter Willow Smith premiered a best-selling single, "Whip My Hair," in 2010.
