According to a new global analysis, almost a third of the world is now fat, and no country has been able to curb obesity rates in the last three decades. Researchers found more than 2 billion people worldwide are now overweight or obese. The highest rates were in the Middle East and North Africa, where nearly 60 percent of men and 65 percent of women are heavy. The U.S. has about 13 percent of the world's fat population, a greater percentage than any other country. China and India combined have about 15 percent.
In actions and words on his first tour of the world's poorest continent, Pope Francis has sent a message to African leaders that they could do with less pomp and bit more humility. In a region where presidents speed past slums in cavalcades of luxury vehicles and the public complain about corruption in high office, the pope was cheered as he drove in a small Honda and told national leaders to act with integrity. Kenya's prolific Twitter users were quick to notice the contrast.
Sir Ian McKellen as Gandalf was one of the most iconic role of the veteran actor’s exemplary career to date. McKellen devoted a total of 15 years to playing the beloved and legendary wizard after appearing in six of Peter Jackson’s films. With the six films accomplished and no plans for continuation (or books available to adapt), if there was any doubt that McKellen has permanently retired Gandalf’s robes and staff, the actor has just verbally confirmed as much to be the case. Larry King has interviewed McKellen for an upcoming episode yet to be aired and a clip from the Ora TV show has been revealed by Comicbook with McKellen declaring himself out in regard to a Gandalf reprisal. Despite a rising trend in Hollywood to treat successful franchises to spin off projects expanding on popular characters or lesser explored factions, this is not a likelihood on the horizon for J.R.R. Who knows what the future may hold for future adaptations of Tolkien’s work, but McKellen’s part in Jackson’s movies will indefinitely stand as a prolific feature of his career and homage to the great classic author who envisioned the character and world he exists within.
Pope Francis speaking in Kenya, which has seen a spate of attacks by Islamist militants, said that dialogue between religions in Africa was essential to teach young people that violence in God's name was unjustified. Bridging divisions between Muslims and Christians is a main theme of his first tour of the continent that also takes him to Uganda has also seen a number of Islamist attacks. Starting his first full day in the Kenyan capital, Francis met Muslim and other religious leaders before saying an open-air Mass for tens of thousands of people.
He’s been a ghost baster, a drunk old neighbor and he even woke up the same day for weeks. But Bill Murray never been the subject of and inspiration for an entire series of art gallery installations, up until now. According toThe BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead in northern England, the Bill Murray: A Story of Distance, Size and Sincerity, that opened last weekend, is a "metaphysical adventure story and a fantasy caricature.
There's bad news for you adrenaline-fueled shoppers—the ones who live for the early wake-up call on the Friday after Thanksgiving. Same for you, Cyber Monday bargain hunters, with your trigger finger on the mouse: your favorite shopping days of the year will soon be obsolete. Soon the build-up to one or two big bargain days for consumers will be over. Retailers will no longer rely on one weekend that pushes them into the black. The era of the big one-size-fits-all sale is coming to an end because the latest operations tech is making it possible for stores to give you what you want at the price you want any day of the year. And this is good news for stores and shoppers both. Consumers can expect to receive the best possible price on a given product at a given time, while retailers can offer any product at the right competitive price to meet their business needs. In a sense, every day will be Black Friday, but without all the hype and obstacles.
