A U.S. military spokesman says one member of an elite Army helicopter unit is dead and two crew members suffered injuries when their aircraft slammed into the ground while trying to land at a Georgia airfield. Allen Hill said Thursday that the MH-60 Black Hawk was returning from a routine training flight to Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah when it made a "hard landing" late Wednesday on or near the airstrip. The names of the dead and injured soldiers were not immediately released.
Sitting down all day is bad -- really bad -- considering that our bodies are designed for the exact opposite. Previous studies have shown your inclined self is at an increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, and an earlier death – especially if you fall short of the recommended amount of daily exercise. Luckily, there’s a fix, researchers from the University of Utah Health Sciences have found that walking for as little as two minutes every hour might be enough to offset the nefarious health hazards of your sedentary lifestyle. Do this or its equivalent for as little as two minutes every hour, and you have a 33% lower risk of dying. Assuming you’re conscious for 16 hours each day (and that might be a big “if” for some of you), the scientists noted that two minutes of walking for each of those hours will expend, roughly, 400 calories – which is 400 calories closer to the weekly recommendation than you were before. Looks like walking around aimlessly while at work just found its purpose.
Carrie Underwood gave her fans a sneak peek at her post-baby bikini body when she posted a summer-infused vacation selfie to Instagram on Tuesday. Carrie, who gave birth to son Isaiah in late February, captioned the photo, "Vacation selfie. "IKnowImLame." While it's not clear where the singer is relaxing ahead of her first Mother's Day, she looks happy and healthy while lounging on what appears to be a white and yellow beach towel. And it's no surprise that Carrie, who wed professional hockey player Mike Fischer in 2010, is already back in a bathing suit. The fit singer recently launched her own athletic-wear line, CALIA by Carrie Underwood.
Legal weed in Washington D.C. means legal munchies in Washington D.C. ... which could be HUGE for the pizza business ... and NFL star Pierre Garcon says he's ready for the boom!!! The Washington Redskins wide receiver -- one of the founders of SpinFire Pizza -- just opened his 2nd location ... this one right in the nation's capital, where weed became legal back in March. "Hopefully, it helps my business," Garcon joked with TMZ Sports ... "but hopefully, not too many people get in trouble with the marijuana in the league." As far as the pizza business goes, Garcon says he's trying to catch up to Peyton Manning ... who owns 21 Papa John's locations in the Denver area -- and is CRUSHING it, btw. "I'm trying to grow like he is!"
Party sources told Reuters that Romania's ruling Social Democrat party will seal a new partnership with a junior ally on Thursday, looking to secure its grip on power before a national election in 2016. Prime Minister Victor Ponta's government has looked vulnerable to defections ever since his surprise defeat in a presidential election in November. Two smaller political parties have already pulled support from his coalition in the aftermath. A new deal with the National Union for the Progress of Romania will provide crucial support for Ponta's cabinet, giving it a functioning majority and thwarting potential attempts by the opposition to topple the cabinet in a censure motion.
When someone uses the term Member of Parliament in the UK, they mean a Member of the House of Commons, the elected chamber of Parliament, as opposed to the un-elected House of Lords. While MPs are central figures in the public perception of our democracy, their job is not that well understood — and it's rather more complex than many people think. Each MP represents the constituency that elected them — their "seat" — including both those who did and who did not vote for them, as well as those who are unable to vote or didn't turn out. In this capacity, MPs spend much of their time dealing with local casework, helping particular problems that individuals bring to them. This part of their role has grown rapidly in recent decades, arguably to the detriment of their work on other matters.
