    Tue, Feb 7, 2012 9:27 AM EST - 6:29

A growing number of older women are driving motor homes and RVs thousands of miles to see friends and places they might never see otherwise. Lee Cowan reports on this hidden group of women who live on the country's roads.

you bet this is a lot of fun, now widowed, but not alone, with Loners on Wheels, and yes, there are men as well on our campouts, but we stay in our own rigs..

There is alot more woman driving big rigs too, woman can do other things besides dishes and clean the house...also being a widower I believe it's a sence of security being able to meet other poeple and to relieve a little bit of the pain of losing there other half...and I'll be willing to bet some most likely have gun under there pillow at night.....and know how to use it!.

My husband and I are retired but we are not "full timers" yet. We do travel quite a bit with our fifth wheel and LOVE IT! If something should happen to my hubby, I would continue to travel with my RV.......Traveling with an RV is a comfortable, educational and exciting experience.

This is a lifetime move. I need more positive posts before taking a leap like this.

I do all the driving and my husband and I travel with our Award RV as much as possible. He can't see well enough to drive. If something ever happens and he is no longer with me (hope this never happens) then I shall continue making trips.

I own an RV park and can tell you we are seeing more and more RVs (primarily motorhomes), with 1 elderly lady or in many cases 2. They seem quite content with their life and give the same two basic reasons as other RVers: I can follow the ideal climate and see the country.

I believe most are ladies who have lost their RV mate, and just decided they could do it themselves. So many long-term friendships are made thru RVing it probably is not too difficult to locate a second lady, who also lost their travel mate, to travel with you.

We don't see more women asking for help in backing into a space, hooking or unhooking, etc. than we do the men.

      My observations.

When is one considered to be elderly, according to you?????
      • TVFun5 3 months ago
Arktvlr - as an owner of an RV Park I'm curious about safety? There are problems everywhere but I was wondering about with a transient population how safe it really is. I'd love to do this myself after I retire - lot cheaper than buying or keeping up a house.

Kittysue, I really hadn't thought about it.
I suppose I consider anyone 'elderly' who has reached the age start drawing their social security. Then from that age on up to ???????

Certainly anyone as old as I (74), is elderly.

I'd love doing this, I like the part no men, I wouldn't have to keep picking up after a man. You raise your kids and now adays you have to raise the husbands, where do I sign up ! LOL

Loved the "RV There yet " heading

Loved the "RV there yet" heading.

On a more somber note it beats the hell out sitting at home waiting to die, getting out there where every day is an adventure, beats sitting at home wondering if the kids will come and visit or call.

It's good to see that their husbands left a positive (non-feminine) impact on them... a victory for guys !
    • hlk  •  3 months ago
good for them i hate to see them just sit around the house after they have devoted so much to everything else in their lives if they are healthy enough they should get out and go see the country
