An astonishingly tragic year for air travel in Southeast Asia turned worse Sunday when an AirAsia plane carrying 162 people disappeared over stormy Indonesian waters, with no word on its fate despite several hours of searching by air and sea. AirAsia Flight 8501 vanished in airspace possibly thick with dense storm clouds, strong winds and lightning on its way from Surabaya, Indonesia, to Singapore. Searchers had to fight against heavy rain. The Malaysia-based carrier's loss comes on top of the still-unexplained disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 in March and the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 in July over Ukraine. At the Surabaya airport, shocked family members pored over the plane's manifest, crying and embracing when they learned the news. Nearly all the passengers and crew are Indonesians, who are frequent visitors to Singapore, particularly on holidays.
French police are looking for thieves who swiped a Siamese crown and other Asian artifacts from the Château de Fontainebleau this weekend. Located some 35 miles outside of Paris, the Château de Fontainebleau was the royal residence of French monarchs since the Middle Ages. It has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is now open to visitors who can tour its sprawling gardens, chapels and galleries. According to a statement from the office of Fleur Pellerin, the art heist took place in Fontainebleau's Chinese Museum, which mostly contains treasures collected by Empress Eugenie, Napoleon III’s wife, France's minister of culture and communications.
An Iranian government report on Monday says Iran's Revolutionary Guard's cyber security division has tracked "likes" by 8 million Iranian Facebook users. It says Facebook openly supports pages that violate the Islamic dress code for women. The Guard also says authorities detained two Iranian users of who were active in managing porn and creating fake profiles. There’s nothing quite like spending some cold hard cash on two of America’s favorite foods: Mentos and Coke Zero. A video experiment starring those two items is making the Internet rounds again, some 10 months after it was created because well, that’s how viral videos work sometimes. In the video, a young man from Japan can be seen sticking many, many pieces of the Freshmaker using tape before dunking himself in a tub filled with many, many open bottles of Coke Zero.
"This one." Those were the words of Rupert Murdoch when asked about his top priority following the 2011 fall of News of the World in a phone hacking scandal . He was referring to Rebekah Brooks, the former chief executive of News International, a subsidiary of Murdoch's News Corp. At the time, Brooks had just been cleared of all charges stemming from the hacking fiasco that ended with more than 100 arrests and the closure of News of the World, which she oversaw. While Brooks emerged from the scandal without formal punishment, she had resigned from News International. Just eight months after being cleared of charges, Brooks is set to return to News Corp in a role focusing on digital media. Brooks comes off to some as an odd fit for the role. As an editor for tabloid newspapers, she has had little experience with digital media or technology.
