'Sexist' Scottish Referendum Ad Provokes Backlash

An advert that aired on two of Scotland’s major television networks on August 26 has been described as “sexist” and “condescending” in reactions on social media. The video shows an actress playing a Scottish mother having a cup of tea in her kitchen. She talks about her husband constantly asking her if she’s decided on how she’ll vote in the independence referendum on September 18.

She concludes, “most of all, I want what’s best for my children”. Independence, she says, is “one big gamble” she’s not willing to take.

Some Scots began tweeting the hashtag #PatronisingBTLady to express their disaproval of the video. Credit: Better Together UK
