Jabhat Al-Nusra Makes Demands for Release of Peacekeepers

Jabhat Al-Nusra have made three demands for the release of 45 Fijian peacekeepers held in southern Syria. The Islamist rebel group called for compensation for three of its fighters killed in a clash with UN peacekeepers, humanitarian aid for Damascus and to be removed from a UN terror blacklist, according to Fijian Army Commander Brigadier-General Mosese Tikoitoga.

The Fijian soldiers were working for the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force, which monitors the Syrian-Israeli border in the Golan Heights region, when they were detained on August 28.

‘We have been assured by UN headquarters that the UN will bring all its resources to bear to ensure the safe return of our soldiers,’ said Brigadier-General Tikoitoga. Credit: YouTube/minfofiji
