Fiji Holds First Election in Eight Years

Fiji held its first democratic election on Wednesday, September 17, since the military coup, led by Frank Bainimarama, took power in 2006. Thousands of Fijians lined up at polling stations around the country as good voter turnouts were recorded, according to a spokesperson for the Fiji Ministry of Information.

International observers oversaw the vote, in which Voreqe Bainimarama, was generally described as the most popular of the seven contesting the election. Credit: YouTube/minfofiji
