An astonishingly tragic year for air travel in Southeast Asia turned worse Sunday when an AirAsia plane carrying 162 people disappeared over stormy Indonesian waters, with no word on its fate despite several hours of searching by air and sea. AirAsia Flight 8501 vanished in airspace possibly thick with dense storm clouds, strong winds and lightning on its way from Surabaya, Indonesia, to Singapore. Searchers had to fight against heavy rain. The Malaysia-based carrier's loss comes on top of the still-unexplained disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 in March and the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 in July over Ukraine. At the Surabaya airport, shocked family members pored over the plane's manifest, crying and embracing when they learned the news. Nearly all the passengers and crew are Indonesians, who are frequent visitors to Singapore, particularly on holidays.
According to recent tests, bulk shipments of rechargeable lithium-ion batteries could result in a catastrophic mid-flight fire. United Airlines joined Delta Air Lines Monday with a ban on bulk shipments of the batteries, while American has limited some types of batteries — but stopped short of a ban. The Federal Aviation Administration has conducted tests for years that have shown the fire danger posed by lithium-ion batteries. Over the past year, those tests have simulated what can happen if the batteries overheat.
A journalist for Mideast cable network Al Jazeera has been fined for flying a drone over the center of Paris. The journalist was one of three people arrested last week for illegally operating aerial vehicles near various landmarks, including the Eiffel Tower. Two of the journalists were released but the third, Tristan Redman, was charged and pleaded guilty. It is illegal to operate a drone in France without permission. A French court ordered Redman to pay a €1,000 fine. He faces as much as a year in prison and a maximum fine of €75,000. Al Jazeera says its journalists had been using drones to investigate the unexplained flyovers. Sky News reported a source familiar with the investigation confirming that the Al Jazeera journalists were not suspects in those cases.
A shopping mall in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia was closed on Tuesday and police raided a nearby house in response to what they described as a threat, just weeks after an alleged mass shooting plot in Halifax was foiled. A search of the house did not result in arrests and the police operation remains active. Two schools, one near the mall and the other near the house, were prohibiting anyone from entering or leaving due to the threat.
The North Atlantic Ocean plays host to some of the strongest winter storms on Earth during the Northern Hemisphere's cold season, and this week is no exception. A storm system that exited the U.S. over the weekend has deepened extremely rapidly off the coast of Newfoundland, and is destined to lash the southeastern Greenland coast as well as Iceland with strong winds and towering waves. The National Weather Service noted that the storm's minimum central air pressure plummeted by 52 millibars in just 24 hours, while spinning up hurricane-force winds.
