MTV announced Wednesday that comedian and late-night talk-show host Conan O'Brien will host this year's MTV Movie Awards. It will be the first time that O'Brien has hosted the annual show, which will take place on April 13 at the Nokia Theatre in downtown Los Angeles. The MTV Movie Awards offers a cheeky take on Hollywood's usual black-tie and gown awards season by handing out golden, popcorn-shaped trophies in categories like "best villain" and "best gut-wrenching performance."
An astonishingly tragic year for air travel in Southeast Asia turned worse Sunday when an AirAsia plane carrying 162 people disappeared over stormy Indonesian waters, with no word on its fate despite several hours of searching by air and sea. AirAsia Flight 8501 vanished in airspace possibly thick with dense storm clouds, strong winds and lightning on its way from Surabaya, Indonesia, to Singapore. Searchers had to fight against heavy rain. The Malaysia-based carrier's loss comes on top of the still-unexplained disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 in March and the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 in July over Ukraine. At the Surabaya airport, shocked family members pored over the plane's manifest, crying and embracing when they learned the news. Nearly all the passengers and crew are Indonesians, who are frequent visitors to Singapore, particularly on holidays.
A law enforcement official familiar with the report said Tuesday that a Justice Department investigation will allege sweeping patterns of discrimination within the Ferguson police department and at the municipal jail and court. The report, which could be released as soon as Wednesday, will charge that police disproportionately use excessive force against blacks and that black drivers are stopped and searched far more often than white motorists, even though they're less likely to be carrying contraband. The Justice Department also found that blacks were 68 percent less likely than others to have their cases dismissed by a municipal court judge, and that from April to September of last year, 95 percent of people kept at the city jail for more than two days were black.
The major American broadcast networks declined to carry live Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to a joint session of Congress boycotted by many leading Democrats Tuesday, and early reaction to the speech in Hollywood seemed to signal a growing disenchantment with the Obama administration foreign policy, particularly the ongoing nuclear negotiations with Iran. Fox News, MSNBC, CNBC and CNN, did broadcast the address, along with CSPAN. The major networks, along with multiple U.S. online news outlets, including The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, did live stream the speech on their websites. In Hollywood, where support for a Democratic president and the state of Israel are as close as you come to consensus issues, reaction to Netanyahu’s visit and address was split.
A United Nations envoy called on Israel on Tuesday to investigate the killing of more than 15-hundred Palestinian civilians, one third of them children, during the 2014 Gaza war, and to make the findings public. Makarim Wibisono, a former Indonesian ambassador, issued his first report to the U.N. Human Rights Council. In Geneva, Secretary of State John Kerry accused the forum on Monday of being obsessed by allegations of Israeli abuses and said the United States would defend Israel against efforts to isolate it. Most civilian victims were "not simply bystanders on the street in the wrong place at the wrong time", he said.
According to Ali Hassi, a security official in the oil protection forces, Islamist militants took over Libya's Bahi oil station and the Mabrouk oilfield on Tuesday after security forces guarding the installations were forced to retreat. Both oil operations were empty after staff were evacuated earlier. Mabrouk had been assaulted last month by Islamist militants claiming loyalty to Islamic State, an attack that killed at least 12 people. Militants have gained ground in Libya, where two rival governments and their armed forces are battling for control, leaving the North African country in turmoil. The United Nations is trying to negotiate a peace agreement.
